Dental bonding is the application of tooth-colored resin to repair a tooth that has become decayed, chipped or discolored. This procedure can be performed in a single dental visit.
The doctors and the oral healthcare professionals at Shelly’s Smile not only provide the best dental bonding in Dallas, but also educate their patients, current and new, on the purpose and technique of dental bonding.
The composite resin used in bonding can be shaped and polished to match the surrounding teeth. Often, bonding is used to repair a chipped tooth or to improve the appearance of teeth that have become discolored. Bonding can also be used to fill gaps between, or to change the shape of teeth.
Sometimes, bonding can be an alternative to amalgam fillings or be used to protect a portion of a root exposed by receding gums.
Often, there is no preparation needed as anesthesia is not necessary. However, anesthesia can be used when there is patient anxiety or when the bonding is used to fill a severe cavity.
Once the dentist chooses the shade of resin, the tooth will be abraded, or roughened, and lightly coated with a conditioning liquid. These steps are necessary for the bonding to adhere to the tooth.
When the tooth is prepared, the dentist will then apply the resin. The resin is molded and smoothed into the desired shape and then hardened with an ultra-violet lamp. When the bonding hardens, the tooth will be further trimmed, shaped and polished to match the surrounding teeth.
The bonding resin is prone to staining from smoking and from drinking coffee, tea, red wine and other stain-producing drinks. For the first 48 hours after the procedure, it is essential to avoid or minimize staining. Teeth must be brushed often, and regular appointments for dental exams and professional cleanings must be kept consistent.
Within the first few days after the procedure, the dentist should be called if the patient feels edges around the bonded tooth, or if the bite feels “off” or strange.
The dentists at Shelly’s Smile Neighborhood Dental are available throughout procedure of dental bonding in Dallas and even after that, ensuring complete care.
It is important to keep in mind that the composite resin is not as strong as a natural tooth. The biting of fingernails or the chewing on pencils or ice will chip the resin. The bonding material can last for several years, and the timing between repairs depends on the amount of resin used and the oral habits of the patient.
